GREENWICH VILLAGE, NY — A new restaurant featuring unique Italian street food opened last week on MacDougal street. The joint Mr. Panzerotto specializes in the Italian classic panzerotto, which translates to “belly dough” in Italian.
Panzerotto is a half-moon shaped, fried turnover typically filled with tomato sauce and mozzarella and ham and spinach. The panzerotto resembles a calzone, except it’s fried instead of baked.
The restaurant is run by Milan native Christian Francone, Gothamist reports. Francone’s parents are from the Apulia region of Italy, where panzerotto was originally created. Patch reached out to Francone and we’re waiting to hear back.
According to Mr. Panzerotto’s website, their restaurant is the “only place in NYC to experience the authentic taste of Panzerotto. Or … you should take a quick trip to Italy and visit my mom’s kitchen.”
Mr. Panzerotto serves various types of panzerotto: such as Mr. Prosciutto filled with ham, tomato sauce and mozzarella; Mr. Sausage with sweet sausage, broccoli rabe and scamorza cheese; and Miss Nutella stuffed with Nutella and ricotta cheese.
The restaurant is at 124 MacDougal St., and their hours are noon to 10 p.m.
